Spain has the second highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. In many ways the country is a microcosm of cultures, drawing its very breath from people of a distant past as well as from those that live within its borders today. Centuries of cultural blending have created a most cosmopolitan, most internationally aware nation. To be so honored by UNESCO so many times over gives testimony to Spain’s history and its ultimate success as a vibrant and creative European treasure.

One cannot mention historic places in Spain without paying homage to the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. Alcala de Henares is the site of the 16th century Castilian home where Spain’s famous son first drew breath. It is also home of the corral de comedias, Europe’s oldest comedy theatre. The UNESCO designation covers the university and the historic city center.

The historic city core of Cordoba, a major cultural center under Moorish rule is home to the many columned Great Mosque that stands just as elegantly today as in times past. Built on top of a Visigoth basilica, it is part of the ancient Caliphate of Cordoba, and the blend of Christian and Muslim designs makes it one of the most unique architectural spaces in the world. The city center is home to several museums, among them the Diocesan Museum of Fine Arts and the Bullfighting Museum, dedicated to Spain’s most beloved pastime.

Segovia and its amazing Roman aqueduct have been listed by UNESCO. Built using blocks of stone but with no mortar, it is held together by perfectly calculated measurements. The double arched structure, dating from between the late 1st and 2nd centuries is still in excellent condition.

The entire island of Ibiza has been granted World Heritage Site honors. Part of the Balearic Island group, it was at one time or another inhabited by most of the ethnic groups of the Mediterranean and each has left an archaeological footprint behind. In addition to its architectural wonders, the beaches and coves of Ibiza are blessed with golden sands and a healthy and diverse marine ecosystem popular with snorkelers and SCUBA divers.
